1. Position of router must be right
In case of Wi-Fi routers, position where you place it matters a lot. Wi-Fi waves are radio waves and these are having short wavelength. These signals can be blocked by obstacles like walls, doors and floors. So it is very crucial to keep the router at a right place in your home and office. Avoid placing the router in cupboards, in closed almirahs or on the floor. Position should be at the centre of the house so router broadcast the signals in all the directions properly.
2. Router should be away from other electronic devices
It is often observed; people keep the routers on the top of television, refrigerator and microwaves and this is such a foolish mistake they do always. It is a common sense to keep your router away from other electronic devices that may use other forms of electromagnetic waves as they could interfere with router’s Wi-Fi waves. People keep their cordless phones also nearby router, which should also be avoided. It also constantly interferes with the Wi-Fi signals.
3. Alignment of antenna
Every Wi-Fi Router comes with an antenna, some come with two. Make sure these are aligned properly.
For example, if you use Wi-Fi with laptops, then position the antenna in a horizontal way as the Wi-Fi radio waves inside a laptop are in horizontal. In the case of mobiles and tablets, this may vary with orientation in which you are using the device. If your router has two antennas, make sure one is kept in a horizontal and the other in vertical positions.
4. Password should be changed routinely
We always complaint, why our internet speed is getting slow or Wi-Fi signal is very weak. Actually we have a habit of sharing our Wi-Fi passwords with friends or relatives whenever they visit our home. Due to this reason many devices connecting to your Wi-Fi, internet speed is expected to get slow. So you should not complaint over it that why internet speed is slowing down. You should change your password to avoid this problem. It also comes to see people steal your Wi-Fi connection. So you need to change your Wi-Fi password almost every month. If you feel need to change every week then go for it.
5. Use a repeater
As mentioned above, Wi-Fi waves are of the shorter wavelength. If your need is more range, then alternative cheapest solution is to use an old router or an inexpensive new router as a repeater. It will enhance the speed in remote locations of your home by boosting the signal.
6. Change the wireless channel
If you are living in an area where there are many Wi-Fi routers being used, then it will be wise to change the wireless channel in which your router broadcast. It is important to change because most of the routers are set to the same channel. By using apps like Wi-Fi analyzer, you can identify the crowded channels and by logging into routers setting you can swap to another less crowded channel.
